What did you expect to learn in this course? Did you learn it?
Upon enrolling in this course I expected that I would learn the history of women and their accomplishments. I hadn't expected as going in depth into issues of how far women had to come with not just sports but equal rights for education and in the business world as well. I'm glad I did because it made me more aware of issues, such as Title IX. I had heard about it but never really looked into the subject or who it affected because I never really had any interest in pursuing sports in college. Also what I learned how women's funding is still denied and it's still not an equal playing field and that things still need to change to fix that. So I would say I learned what I expected to plus a whole lot more and it gave me more insight to the subject as well as struggles women face.
Did your view of women in sport change as a result of this course? Why or why not?
I'd say that my view of women in sport has changed significantly after this course, I had never really thought so much of women not receiving media attention as much or that they didn't get to participate in sports like men do. I hadn't even thought about fair treatment in education. After learning what women have had to fight through in this course I have a better understanding and appreciation for what they had to fight for to get the fair treatment they should have had all along. I also have more appreciation for what I benefit from just by being born male and hopefully society realizes that it shouldn't matter what you happened to be born as but provide equality for all people in all forms.

Final Exam- Distance Learning
Prior to the course, I felt that the women were allowed an unfair amount of scholarships compared with men’s sports, especially when it comes to the smaller men’s sports. For instance, women volleyball teams receive 12 full ride scholarships, while men’s teams receive just 4.5. To continue, women’s division one volleyball team throughout the nation are around 365 teams, while men’s division one teams number 21. The drastic changes have occurred because of Title IX, while the changes has promoted women’s participation in sports, the change has drastically hit small sports for men. Sports such as volleyball, rowing, soccer, wrestling, water polo, golf, and other such sports have felt the effect of Title IX. Although, Title IX has been a major step towards equality for women, the law has detrimentally affected sports that use to thrive within the college atmosphere. After taking the class, I have come to realize that the law has an important step toward equality for women. Without this movement, women in sports would still be a relatively rare in a field dominated by men. Although, I still believe that the small sports or the non-money making sports should not fall victim to Title IX. There needs to be some sort of modification of the law that does not eliminate sports.
One thing that I would like to learn more about are the psychological factors behind each gender participating in sports. From my experience, there seems to be a drastic difference in individual reasoning why each person participates in sports, however, between genders there seems to be an even greater difference in participation. I also feel that it would be important from a coaching viewpoint to understand the basic reasons why the different genders participate in sport. With a better understanding of what drives different individuals would allow coaches to tailor their practices and drills to suit the different genders.

Final Exam
What did you expect to learn in this course? Did you learn it?
Originally, I took this course because I needed a capstone and really wasn't too sure what to expect. I thought "women in sport" was going to be about women who are involved with sports such as professional athletes and their careers. Along with that, I thought it was going to involve some of their biographies and maybe some struggles they faced trying to become a professional female athlete. Although we did not learn the entirety of that in this course, I believe I received much more than I originally expected. I learned different aspects about women, a few female athletes, different obstacles that interfere with women, and different class and gender issues. We did come across some females and learned about their lives and what they went through during their career, but this class went further in depth about other topics as well. For example, the Clydesdale races and even about how media portrays women, title ix, and steroids.
If you could share one idea from this course with others, what would it be, and why?
If I could share one thing about this course, it would definitely be about title ix. I want to share this with people because the majority doesn't know how it could effect them and how it has got women involved in sports throughout the years. Although there is flaws in title ix, it has brought hundreds of thousands of women into athletics. I just want more people to be aware how it could effect them and even one day their children. There is a lot of of controversy involved in it and I just would like more people to be aware of it. It is a very interesting topic and without title ix, women athletics would not be what they are today.

Final Exam- Distance Learning
What did you expect to learn in this course? Did you learn it?
Originally I took this course simply because I had to for my major. It was not something that I was necessarily interested in but I thought to myself, “I enjoy sports, so it shouldn’t be bad at all”. Before taking this course, I just thought I would learn about the history of women in sport. After taking this course, I definitely learned the grueling history of women’s sport. I learned the hardships that women’s sports faced throughout their history and are even still facing today. I also expected to learn what women in sport were able to accomplish. I definitely learned the wonderful accomplishments of female athletes after taking this course. Dr. Kauer did an excellent job of approaching all the spectrums regarding women’s sport. I learned a lot from this course that I can take away and use in the way I approach sport now and even women in general.
Did your view of Women in sport change as a result of this course? Why or why not?
My opinions have definitely changed as a result of taking this Women in Sport class. Before this class, I would approach women’s sport with much hesitation if at all. I was never really interested in women’s sport and as a result, I would ignore the accomplishments of women in sport for the most part because I was so concentrated on the male spectrum in sport. However, after taking this course, I realized how amazing women athletes are. Contrary to my prior beliefs, women are just as capable as men when in comes to sports and as should be celebrated in the same manner. I have genuinely learned to appreciated women sports and their athletes accomplishments in the same manner that I appreciate men’s. My view of women sport has also changed, I now find interest in women’s sport that I didn’t have before and will definitely be keeping up with it like I do with other sports.

Final Exam Distance Learning Response
Complete the following sentence: I used to think — but now I think — .
I used to think women who exploited themselves by posing partially or fully nude were women who didn’t care about what that said about them. I used to think that they were women who were facilitating and maintaining the way women and women in sport are “supposed to be viewed.” But now I think that they, just like the rest of society, assume that this is how it is supposed to be. That women have to work harder to get noticed for their hard work and accomplishments, and when they are noticed, 9 times out of 10 it is because of their bodies. Their bodies are selling their sport, not their talent or accomplishments. I am not saying that these women do not have a choice, on the contrary, the other choices just have not been made available. Sports fans watch men’s sports like football or men’s basketball, not women, condemning them before they get a chance. In fact, the only time women are brought into the world of men’s sports is when they are playing a supportive role, like wife, girlfriend, mother or cheerleader. Everywhere we turn sports are represented by men, whereas fitness, health and looking good is for the women to do, not competitive sport. Hopefully this will change
If someone asked you, “what did you learn in KIN 338I,” how would you respond? How do you think you would respond in five years from now?
The fact that women are so underrepresented and ignored mostly in the world of sports often goes highly unnoticed. It is actually accepted or assumed that women follow behind the men’s shadows, making it harder for them to create a name for themselves. This is of course what society has laid out for us to think as normal. My views after this class have definitely changed, and I now subconsciously look for ways in which women are exploited or held back, especially in the sports realm. However, considering how far women have come in such little time shows that they are still changing the world, and even in as little as 5 years from now, I think we will see more change in the favor of women in sport.

When I registered for this women in sport class I was expecting to learn about specific women athletes and their accomplishments in sports, such as Jackie Joyner-Kersey, Billy Jean King and maybe even Jennie Finch. But this class was more focused on learning about the struggles that women have encountered trying to get involved in sports. So I guess I did not exactly learn about what I thought I was going to, but I did learn alot from this course. I was not aware of all the issues that women have to deal with in sports, for example the menstrual cycle and exercise never crossed my mind before this course. I think that learning about these issues was good for me because it opened my eyes to how unequal sports are for men and women. It also made me want to change some of my personal beliefs about sports in general because after taking the class I realized that I was a part of the group that discriminated against women in sports.
With that said, my opinions about Title IX have changed, my view of women athletes has changed and in the end, my overall appreciation for sports has increased. Before this class I thought that Title IX was the reason why we, Long Beach State, dont have a football program anymore because I thought that Title IX meant that for every men's sport we need a women's sport. After learning about Title IX I now understand that it is a good thing because it's main purpose is to have equality in sport between men and women, at every level. Since the passing of Title IX in 1972 the amount of women participating in sports has dramatically increased to today, where almost half of athletes in this country are women. Because of this class I have also gained respect and appreciatin for women athletes because it is very easy to see now that women's sports are their own institutionsd, and they are still growing. I can honestly say that I will now watch more women's sports because I have a better understanding for them.

What did you expect to learn in this course? Did you learn it?
Initially, I was trying to enroll in a sports appreciation course but it was full. Being a Business Major I decided instead to take this class as it was a capstone that fulfilled several areas for my GE. I really didn’t know what to expect from this class. I read the name of the class and it seemed like something that could broaden my horizons. And that is exactly what it did. I expected to have a more open and altered perspective of female athletes trying to compete and gain equal coverage. Along with more detailed information on the wrong things done to female athletes and what they chose to do to overcome these hardships. I can honestly say that I learned about all of this in this course. I am more informed on how there is still a gap in equality as far as media coverage and overall society’s view of female athletes compared to male athletes. I am very glad that the sports appreciation class was full so that I could take this course.
Did your view of Women in sport change as a result of this course? Why or why not?
Prior to taking this course, I never really thought twice about female athletes. Mainly the reason for this was I just didn’t really know any female athletes directly, therefore it just didn’t spark my interest. After taking a class that is so mainly focused on women and their hardships in sports and overall equality it opened my perspective immensely. I have much more appreciation and concern for female athletes after taking this course. There were way too many roadblocks and difficulties for female athletes for one not to be supportive of the whole movement. This course has made my view of women participating in sport so much more open and welcoming. Many of the various papers and projects helped to supplement the information in the best form for absorbing it. Professor Kauer, you did a wonderful job of teaching this class, and I will recommend it to any of my fellow colleagues in need of a capstone or just in need of their perspective needing to be broadened. Thank you very much and I enjoyed your class a lot!

Final Exam Distance Learning
What did you expect to learn in this course? Did you learn it?
To be honest, I didnt plan on learning anything. I needed to take a capstone and being a history major I wanted to take a course that seemed easy. The less reading that was involed the better. The more the semester progessed the more I found myself becoming more interested with the readings and topics. When I was assigned the topic of gender testing for female athletics and involed myself with the reasearch I learned so much about the proceptions of gender. I wanted to know more about how gender is a social construct, and as a result how I am a result of these constructs. I found out that in many aspects I am a typical women since I fit into these constructs but just because I fit into them does not mean I should jugde others that dont.
Did your view of women in sport change as a result of this course? Why or why not?
Yes of course! When I would see women athlets on the cover of sports magazine I would think to myself. Wow that girl has a body! I wish I could look like that! Now I see how they are objectifield. These women put long hours into training and for for? To be seen as sex symblos? It makes me sad, and I obvouisly dont view that in the same way i used to.
