What did you expect to learn in this course? Did you learn it?
Originally I took this course simply because I had to for my major. It was not something that I was necessarily interested in but I thought to myself, “I enjoy sports, so it shouldn’t be bad at all”. Before taking this course, I just thought I would learn about the history of women in sport. After taking this course, I definitely learned the grueling history of women’s sport. I learned the hardships that women’s sports faced throughout their history and are even still facing today. I also expected to learn what women in sport were able to accomplish. I definitely learned the wonderful accomplishments of female athletes after taking this course. Dr. Kauer did an excellent job of approaching all the spectrums regarding women’s sport. I learned a lot from this course that I can take away and use in the way I approach sport now and even women in general.
Did your view of Women in sport change as a result of this course? Why or why not?
My opinions have definitely changed as a result of taking this Women in Sport class. Before this class, I would approach women’s sport with much hesitation if at all. I was never really interested in women’s sport and as a result, I would ignore the accomplishments of women in sport for the most part because I was so concentrated on the male spectrum in sport. However, after taking this course, I realized how amazing women athletes are. Contrary to my prior beliefs, women are just as capable as men when in comes to sports and as should be celebrated in the same manner. I have genuinely learned to appreciated women sports and their athletes accomplishments in the same manner that I appreciate men’s. My view of women sport has also changed, I now find interest in women’s sport that I didn’t have before and will definitely be keeping up with it like I do with other sports.
